God’s Encouragement to Persevere

Acts 18:7–11 (NASB95)

7Then he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God, whose house was next to the synagogue. 8Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord with all his household, and many of the Corinthians when they heard were believing and being baptized. 9And the Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid any longer, but go on speaking and do not be silent; 10for I am with you, and no man will attack you in order to harm you, for I have many people in this city.” 11And he settled there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

We see Paul’s ministry take a significant turn as he continues to proclaim the Gospel in Corinth. After facing opposition in the synagogue, he moves his work to the house of Titius Justus, a Gentile worshiper of God whose home provided a strategic base for ministry. Interestingly, Titius Justus’s house was located right next to the synagogue, ensuring that Paul remained visible and accessible to those curious about his message. This move highlights Paul’s adaptability and determination to continue preaching, even when faced with resistance. Moreover, the conversion of Crispus, a synagogue leader, along with his entire household, demonstrates the far-reaching impact of Paul’s message. Encouraged by a vision from the Lord, Paul is assured of divine protection and the presence of many in Corinth who would come to faith. This assurance inspires Paul to remain in the city for an extended period, building a strong foundation for the Corinthian church and demonstrating God’s faithfulness in protecting and guiding His servants.

Paul’s example challenges the modern church to remain steadfast and adaptable in ministry, even when met with resistance. His strategic use of Titius Justus’s home reminds us of the importance of building relationships and using available resources to advance God’s work. Additionally, Paul’s reliance on God’s encouragement through a vision underscores the need for prayerful dependence on God’s guidance in challenging times. As we face opposition or discouragement in our efforts to share the Gospel, let us remember God’s promise to be with us and His assurance that our labor is not in vain. By trusting in His provision and faithfully persevering, we can continue to build His church and reach those who need to hear His message.
