Devotion to the Word and Bold Witness

Acts 18:5–6 (NASB95)

5But when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began devoting himself completely to the word, solemnly testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

6But when they resisted and blasphemed, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am clean. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”

In this passage, we see a pivotal moment in Paul’s ministry as Silas and Timothy arrive, likely bringing support from the Macedonian churches, which allows Paul to fully devote himself to preaching the Word. Freed from the need to labor for his livelihood, Paul intensifies his efforts to testify to the Jews that Jesus is the promised Messiah. However, his message is met with resistance and even blasphemy from some in the synagogue. In response, Paul boldly declares his innocence of their rejection, symbolically shaking out his garments as a sign of judgment and turning his focus to the Gentiles. This moment reflects Paul’s unwavering commitment to his calling and his willingness to adapt his ministry strategy when faced with opposition, all while remaining faithful to the mission of proclaiming the Gospel.

Paul’s example challenges us to remain steadfast in our devotion to God’s Word and bold in our witness, even when we encounter resistance or rejection. His ability to adapt his approach without compromising the message of the Gospel is a powerful reminder for us today. As modern believers, we are called to prioritize the proclamation of Jesus, making use of the resources and opportunities God provides to focus on His mission. When faced with opposition, we must trust in God’s sovereignty and continue to share His truth with those who are open to hearing it. Let us be encouraged to persevere in our calling, knowing that God’s Word will not return void and that He will guide us to those who are ready to receive His message.
