Paul’s Vision and His Call to the Gentiles
Acts 22:17–21 (NASB95)
17“It happened when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I fell into a trance, 18and I saw Him saying to me, ‘Make haste, and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about Me.’ 19“And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves understand that in one synagogue after another I used to imprison and beat those who believed in You. 20‘And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was being shed, I also was standing by approving, and watching out for the coats of those who were slaying him.’ 21“And He said to me, ‘Go! For I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’ ”
Paul recounts a pivotal moment in his life when, while praying in the temple, he experienced a vision of Jesus. In this vision, Jesus instructed Paul to leave Jerusalem quickly because his testimony about Jesus would not be accepted there. Paul, in his response, reminds Jesus of his past zeal in persecuting Christians, even consenting to the death of Stephen. Paul likely believed his dramatic transformation would make him the perfect witness to the Jewish people. However, Jesus had a different plan, sending Paul to the Gentiles instead. By sharing this part of his testimony, Paul emphasizes that his mission to the Gentiles was not his own idea but a direct command from Jesus. This was a controversial point for his audience, as many Jews struggled to accept that God’s salvation extended to the Gentiles. Paul’s recounting of this vision highlights his obedience to God’s call, even when it meant leaving behind his own people and facing hostility.
Paul’s vision reminds us that God’s plans often differ from our own, and we must be willing to follow His call, even when it challenges our expectations or comfort. His obedience to take the Gospel to the Gentiles demonstrates the importance of embracing God’s mission to reach all people, regardless of cultural or ethnic boundaries. As the modern church, we are called to reflect this same heart for the nations, sharing the message of Jesus with those who may be different from us. Let us trust in God’s wisdom and be faithful to His call, knowing that His plans are always greater than our own.
