Boldness in Truth and God’s Sovereignty

Acts 21:37–40 (NASB95)  

37As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he said to the commander, “May I say something to you?” And he said, “Do you know Greek? 38“Then you are not the Egyptian who some time ago stirred up a revolt and led the four thousand men of the Assassins out into the wilderness?” 39But Paul said, “I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city; and I beg you, allow me to speak to the people.” 40When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, motioned to the people with his hand; and when there was a great hush, he spoke to them in the Hebrew dialect, saying, 

Paul’s interaction with the Roman tribune and the crowd in Jerusalem is a powerful example of boldness and wisdom in the face of hostility. After being arrested and nearly killed by the mob, Paul surprises the Roman tribune by addressing him in fluent Greek, which immediately challenges the tribune’s assumptions about Paul’s identity. The tribune had mistaken Paul for an Egyptian revolutionary, but Paul’s eloquence and calm demeanor reveal his true identity as a well-educated Jew from Tarsus. Paul’s request to address the crowd is granted, and he prepares to speak to the very people who had just sought his life. This moment highlights Paul’s unwavering commitment to proclaiming the truth of the Gospel, even in the most dangerous circumstances. It also demonstrates God’s sovereignty, as He uses Paul’s linguistic skills, cultural background, and boldness to create an opportunity for the Gospel to be shared. 

Paul’s courage and wisdom challenge us to remain bold in proclaiming the truth, even when faced with opposition or misunderstanding. His ability to address both the Roman tribune and the Jewish crowd reminds us of the importance of being prepared to share the Gospel in ways that resonate with different audiences. As believers, we must trust in God’s sovereignty, knowing that He can use our unique backgrounds, skills, and circumstances to advance His kingdom. Let us commit to speaking the truth with boldness and grace, trusting that God will guide and empower us, even in the most challenging situations.
