The Importance of Truth and Guarding the Faith

Acts 20:25–30 (NASB95)

25“And now, behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face. 26“Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. 27“For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. 28“Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29“I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian elders is a profound reminder of the importance of truth and the responsibility of believers to uphold it. Paul reflects on his ministry, emphasizing that he did not shrink back from declaring the whole counsel of God. He reminds the elders that his faithfulness to proclaim the truth has left him innocent of their blood, a reference to the watchman imagery in Ezekiel, where the one who warns others of danger is not held accountable for their response. Paul also warns of the danger of apostasy, foretelling that false teachers will arise, even from within the church, to distort the truth and lead others astray. This warning is sobering, as we see similar dangers in our own time, with false teachings and cultural pressures threatening to dilute the Gospel. Paul’s words highlight the critical need for vigilance, faithfulness, and a deep commitment to the truth of God’s Word.

Paul’s example challenges us to remain steadfast in proclaiming and defending the truth, even when it is difficult or unpopular. His commitment to not holding back from speaking what is profitable reminds us that we must boldly declare the whole counsel of God, addressing both the comforting and convicting aspects of His Word. The warning of apostasy is especially relevant today, as false teachings and cultural compromises infiltrate the church. We must be vigilant, grounded in Scripture, and discerning, ensuring that we guard the faith and protect others from being led astray. Let us commit to standing firm in the truth, proclaiming it with love and boldness, and trusting in God’s grace to sustain us in this vital mission.
