When God's Calling Meets Human Manipulation
Genesis 30:25–28 (NASB95)
25Now it came about when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own place and to my own country. 26“Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me depart; for you yourself know my service which I have rendered you.” 27But Laban said to him, “If now it pleases you, stay with me; I have divined that the Lord has blessed me on your account.” 28He continued, “Name me your wages, and I will give it.”
God had promised Jacob that he would return to the land of Canaan. With the birth of Joseph, Jacob senses that the time has come to move forward. He approaches Laban and asks to leave with his wives and children. Jacob has fulfilled his obligations. He has every right to go. Yet, he seeks Laban’s blessing before departing. This shows respect and a desire for peace, but it is not required. God’s calling does not depend on human approval.
Laban’s response reveals his unchanged character. He admits that he has learned through divination (this will have to be a conversation for another day) that God has blessed him because of Jacob. Still, Laban wants to keep Jacob for his own benefit. He offers to pay Jacob any wages he wants, hoping to keep the source of his prosperity. Laban knows the truth about God’s favor, but he chooses to use it for himself. He is not interested in God’s plan, only in what he can gain.
Jacob stands at a crossroads. Has he learned from his past? He shows maturity by seeking peace, but he also opens himself to more manipulation. Laban represents the world’s darkness. He recognizes God’s blessing but tries to use it for selfish ends. Those who walk in darkness will do whatever they can to keep God’s people from fulfilling their calling. They may offer incentives or try to delay what God has set in motion
The lesson is clear. You do not need someone’s blessing to pursue your calling in the Lord. Respect for others is good, but God’s purpose stands on its own. The world may try to keep you in place for its own benefit. Do not let anyone hold you back from what God has called you to do. Trust God’s timing. Move forward in faith. God is faithful to guide and provide for those who follow His call, even when others try to stand in the way.
